As an optimist, I'm confident that NY will soon adopt permissive metric-only. Now, AL might be another matter.

Jim,

You wrote to the PEI that, of the 2 states that have not signed on to the
updated UPLR that permits metric-only labeling, one is about to sign on.

Great news!

Just wondering if this is really true, and, if so, how we know this.

thanks,
Ezra

Just now I got a reply from Robert Renkes, President of PEI. His response was short but sweet: "Right you are."

He promised nothing but I imagine that my proposal will at least be considered.

Recent articles indicate that once again our nation's older gasoline pumps are near the end of their capabilities for recording sale prices and rates.

The time has come for PEI to dust off a technique used by Shell in the early '70s when this problem also arose. We should start selling gasoline by the liter and make it a permanent feature.

All but two states now allow metric-only labeling of products and one of those two is about to join the group. The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act is expected to be amended soon to allow metric-only labeling on federally controlled goods. The U.S. is moving towards metric packaging and unit pricing. Water, fruit juices, and even milk in some areas are being sold by the liter and half-liter. Americans understand liters.
