I think you've just broken a logjam with a well-placed toothpick for me. I think that the way to metric for me is actually one word we could provide to our people---the word is decimal. The idea that the metric system works the same simple way the currency works is key. We must clear away all the junk and demonstrate clearly that the metric system is simpler than the system we are now using. That part about "measurement standard" can come later in the argument.
