As a noun, the Wikipedia definition of "metric" is absolutely correct.

As an adjective (answering the questions which, what kind of, or how many),
the word "metric" is what this forum is all about: referring to SI units.

I have not studied the etymology of the word back to antiquity, but I
suspect that "meter" is derived from "metric" which most likely comes from
some ancient word for the idea of "to measure."
