I must agree that it is barmy that all official references in documents were in 
kilometers while those same kilometers were illegal on actual signs and had to 
be converted to miles.  Given the intent of the UK to metricate, he does seem 
to have missed the obvious solution, however.

Then again, there is the whole issue of the obvious metric unit of volume is 
illegal on beer glasses, but mandatory of bottles of beer.
