Who is responsible for the custody of the US prototype kilogram? Is it
NIST or is it some other body?

After expressing hope that we keep metrication non-political, I now have
to surface this. It is important because NIST is within the Department
of Commerce. This is at such a "high level" that I can't tell whether
NIST would move to a new function or be eliminated. If eliminated, it
would surely sound the death knell for metrication in the United States.

Per the article, President Obama seeks to eliminate the Dept. of
Commerce and consolidate SOME of its functions with other agencies.

The rest of the proposal may or may not make sense, but I want to hear
details on NIST before I am even willing to listen to the rest of the
yacking.
