All: I have a fairly old Lufkin 2 m folding carpenters rule labelled 699M. It is no longer made. It is marked in millimeters with every 100 units in red. It is two-way meaning it can be unfolded to read left-to-right or right-to-left -- a very good arrangement as only one rule is needed for careful work. The one thing I would like to see is markings on the edge so that the rule can be read accurately while flat but this may be asking too much. In addition, an enclosed brass extension would allow for interior measurements as these were common on higher quality earlier customary folding rules.  This type of rule used to be very common with finish carpenters because they could do much more accurate work as opposed to flexible tapes which will always be a bit off no matter what carpenters tell me.

Several years ago some employees of the Russian railways came to our building in Washington.  They handed out small gifts.  One of them was a 3 m tape measure, with the railway’s logo on it.  The person who received it, who is “old school”, gave it to me.

 

Ironically, the button you push to retract the tape has the word “PUSH” on it!

Harry, on his 2004 visit to the U.S., our friend and long-time USMA member Mike Joy brought me an 8 m metal tape measure from Australia that is in millimeters only, made by the Hammer company. On his last visit, he brought me one of those multi-segment, folding wooden rulers, length 2 m,  made by the Bauer company in Germany that is metric only. It is labeled Bauer Model 400.

I have a 5 m tape measure given to me by a Canadian.  I looked on the company site (starrett.com)  and only could find a dual measure version, although there seem to be a few metric only longer tapes.  Pretty annoying!
