Granted that the Calorie (kilocalorie) is not SI, at least it is metric -- another metric unit in common usage, which is probably not recognized as metric by the general population, just as that population probably doesn't recognize the "watt" and other electrical-rated units as metric.

Instead of the USMA's past emphasis on how NON-metric the U.S. is, I have recommended to the USMA officers a new theme for the future: "The U.S. is more metric than you realize!" Maybe if the population realizes that, it will be less fearful of the expansion of the metric system.

This expansion has already occurred, for example, in the new 2012 labels for CFL bulbs, which introduce the SI unit lumen, a much more rational way of describing light for practical purposes than the watt. Moreover, the nutrition labels on most products have for a long time been only metric. The only inch-pound units may be found in the Serving line, which always includes the appropriate metric unit as well.
