Would it make sense to start teaching only metric and defer introducing the inch (without using any rulers marked in inches) until students can multiply arbitrary three-digit numbers? Also I think the inch should be introduced as defined in metric, rather than the inch being related to the foot but neither related to the meter, as the Common Core now says.
