Okay, that sounds really odd.  Do you have a bootable CDROM drive and an install CD?  
If so, you could try the trick I mentioned with the vmlinuz root=/dev/hda? line.  
Perhaps it will work then.  Or if not, at least you'll be booted into your system and 
will be able to get to your files.
