I got a Canon S100 about a year ago, and I've been very pleased with it.
It's got a very small form-factor, which was my primary reason for
choosing it. I almost never used my other cameras because they were too
bulky to just carry around, but my S100 fits nicely into decent-sized
pockets, so it gets a lot of use whenever I go on an outdoors trip.
They don't make the S100 anymore, but the S110 is pretty much the same,
but slightly improved. The image quality is pretty good, it's got USB
transfer (MUCH nicer than serial) and uses CompactFlash cards. I'm not
sure if Gphoto supports it now, but Gphoto2 does. I haven't really
followed it much, though, I typically boot to Windows, as it comes with
some nice image library management software. Gphoto2 was completely
CLI-based when I used it, it's probably advanced since then.
Good luck with your decision and purchase!
