I use Debian on pretty much all of my boxes, and the default Mozilla
install has the Xft support in it. You just have to change a config
file. There are instructions for it somewhere, either in
/usr/doc/mozilla or findable by google. :)
To answer the question that you probably don't really need to fix this
problem, yes there are RPM tools for Debian. But if you want to make
your own debs, you'd probably be better served looking at the docs
Debian provides to do so and using their utilities. You could grab a
source deb for the app you want, modify it, and install from there. Or
grab a tarball and write your own .deb directives. When I was using
Debian PPC, I used source .debs for a couple of packages that didn't
have the features I wanted in the binary .debs, and it worked great.
