up2date isn't compiling the kernel, just installing a pre-compiled
binary.

As for the nv driver, the answer is "maybe". You might be able to get
away with repeating the install process, but don't count onit. Binary
only drivers are ugly. Opinions vary, but I'd prefer to buy ATI over
nVidia just because of the drivers.
