Ok, I just got an external USB/Firewire case to put a 40 GB IDE drive in. It's a TT-745 and has an Oxford chipset. I hooked it up to my laptop (through USB) and mounted it just fine. I've been using it to back up home dirs, etc, and it works just fine with small files. If I try to rsync or copy any file over about 100 MB in size my system just barfs and the system hard locks. I've rebooted my laptop (inspiron 5000 running Gentoo) about 7 or 8 times tonight.
Here's the output from /var/log/messages when I plug it in:
Mar 18 23:47:24 medusa kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:07.2-1, assigned address 3

Any ideas on what's going on? Has anyone had problems like this before?
