What error?

dpkg-reconfigure xdm

If you're using xdm you'll need to edit your ~/.xsession file to start
your window manager of choice, e.g.:

    #!/bin/bash
    exec wmaker || exec x-terminal-emulator

Make sure it's executable. Maybe you'd rather be running kdm, gdm, or (my
favorite) wdm? Those display managers let you choose which window
manager to use (so you don't have to edit .xsession).
