man interfaces I usually only put the ip address and netmask in. The other stuff is then implied and usually works fine. (unless your network administrator is doing something funky)
You'll need to put the DNS information in /etc/resolv.conf. If you're not familiar with the format, man resolv.conf (it's real simple) (there's probably a gui or text-ui config tool for this but I find editing /etc/network/interfaces easier than any gui) * Michael R.
