I don't recall if the debian install uses the framebuffer or not but
that sounds like what the problem is. Try appending video=3Dvesa:off
and/or video=3Dvga16:off to the boot line. Or perhaps vga=3Dask and try the
different modes.

E.g.

LILO: linux video=3Dvesa:off

Replace 'linux' with whatever boot name is appropriate (I think F1 will
give you a list at the boot screen, or press <TAB>)
