I was having the same symptoms, and I just found a solution. mail.attbi.com
was the POP, IMAP, and SMTP server for ATTBI. When we were sold (like the
serfs we are) to Comcast, mail.comcast.net became the POP and IMAP server,
but they use a seperate SMTP server: smtp.comcast.net. If you attempt to send
email through mail.comcast.net it goes very slow and will sometimes fail. I
haven't had any problems since I started sending through smtp.comcast.net.
        I hope this helps,
                Richard Esplin
