I knew I should have paid more attention in CS 450 when we talked about compression. Yeah, after I sent that original post I thought, "Wait, I probably have such random data that even bzip2 wouldn't do much." So, being the nerd that I am, I tried tar again using bzip2 as suggested. It took much longer but in fact did worse than gzip. The data though not compressed in the first place (no jpgs, mp3, etc), must be terribly random. Thanks for the reminders. Dr. Barrett would smack me upside the head if he knew I had forgot his lectures on compression :-)
