This may have been mentioned on the list before, but I recommend getting a cop of "Revolution OS" -- the documentary about free software/open source/Linux/Apache . . . I rented it and liked it so much that I bought a copy from Thinkgeek (and it came with a free Linux-fish sticker -- you know, like those "Jesus" fish stickers).
It chronicles the development of GNU and the free software philosophy, focusing on Linux along the way. It features interviews with Stallman, Eric Raymond, Bruce Perens, Linus Torvalds and even a brief snippet with Rob Malda (for all you Taco fans). I bought it because I wanted my family to see it -- I think it will help them understand what it is I'm always talking about. RMS, quite frankly, comes across as a bit of a blowhard -- but his contribution to all of it is undeniable. Which, I suppose, is fairly accurate. His passion for his ideals are largely responsible for the birth and rise of free software, but that same passion leaves him little room for understanding or acceptance of differing views. Anyway, I highly recommend the documentary.
