If they follow system V (god bless SCO) standard, then that is ideal. 
Unfortunately Gentoo does not.  Perhaps a utility for generating init
scripts would be nice.  Such tools would be really nice for targetting
the various init architectures out there.  I really hate putting
packages on my redhat machine (like Win4Lin) that don't follow the
system V standard and thus don't integrate with my system standard
scripts (can't be managed by the runlevel editor, don't detect changes
and process existance properly etc).
