That timeout is the error I was looking for. I get that with a couple of different usb devices, including my usb printer cable. I don't know how to fix this, except that it makes the device not work at all. Sometimes when I upgrade the kernel this problem occurs no more for certain devices. Anyway, looks like there is a subtle incompatibility between your drive's chipset and your linux drivers. Not sure what to do except to contact the maintainers of the usb-storage driver (report a bug). Of course the problem could be elsewhere. Sorry to not be able to give encouraging news. My oxford-based drives work great, though. I've also had good luck with firewire enclosures lately too.
