Thanks for all the responses thus far. I did get the issue resolved. My brother, who was the one trying to play the CDs, was using the CD-ROM which wasn't connected to the sound card. The other CD-ROM is connected, and when I used that (as well as unmuted the volume) it worked. When I built the box, the original sound card had three inputs, but the on-board sound of the motherboard that I'm using now only has two; one for the CD-ROM, the other for my All-in-Wonder. Mental blunder on my part.
