I've done VISA transactions online with Firebird, and haven't gotten ripped off yet :-)
But, honestly, I don't know enough about the internals of these programs or about security in general to give a meaningful overview of any vulnerabilities. I do know that your parents would probably benefit from the simplified/prettified GUI on Firebird.
However Thunderbird still has some really annoying bugs (UI mostly).
