Wow. I just had a crazy experience. I got home from church and my mail/web/file/print/etc server was dead. It turns out the new 80 GB HD I put in about 3 months ago died and I couldn't get *ANY* data off of it after messing with it for several hours.
I threw in an old 4 GB drive, installed RH9, and 'apt-get upgrade'ed the
box. Luckily I do occasional backups and had my old /etc. So I moved my
/etc dir out of the way, copied over my backup /etc, and rebooted the
machine. EVERYTHING WORKED PERFECTLY. Last time it took me over a week
to get the system configured right, this time it took 5 minutes.
If I had a windows box I would have had to reconfigure each app. Just
another reason why Linux rocks...
