This message is for archival purposes. I know I'm gonna need to do this again, and it took me a few hours to figure out, so now the solution will be here for posperity.

I was having a problem getting my pcmcia wireless card (prism2_cs to work with the stock debian 2.4.21-5 kernel and the wlan-ng drivers. Everytime I would try to load the prism2_cs module I would get this message in dmesg:

ds: no socket drivers loaded!

this was frustrating so I finally figured out you need to load the yenta_socket module first, then load the prism2_cs module (or the ds module, if that is what you're trying to do.) Why this wasn't automatically loaded when I was trying to load ds is a mystery to me. Anyone have any ideas?
