The first thing I'd look into is a "linux on a disk" type of distro; one
that can read FAT and has drivers for your card so you can copy that data.
Check out tomsrtbt [1]; I haven't played with it for a while, but it may do
what you want.

As for an install, I'd recommend trying (at least) a BSD, perhaps OpenBSD.
Don't know about the latest, but about 2 versions ago you could get a very
functional (ssh, sendmail, apache, no X) install for around 100MB.  It
supports FTP install.
