I've been using ACPI for a year now, but I have no idea how to do any kind of suspend. I believe it is not supported yet. But you can monitor the lid event. Use acpid if you want and then add a script in /etc/acpi/events that will call shutdown or poweroff when it gets a lid event. That's probably the best you can hope for right now.
