I had the same problem. Easiest way is to do a normal defragment from within WinXP and then boot off of a partition magic disk/cd. It magically knows how to work around the fact that the data is all over the place even though QTParted doesn't. I know that it works because I just did it this last thursday (evan can vouch for me).
