Why? Because they are hardware vendors. If their customers spend less money on purchasing/developing/maintaining software, they have more in their budget to spend on hardware. Software and hardware vendors have an interesting relationship. They need each other to sell products and must cooperate, but they are fighting for a larger portion of the pie. In public, they have to look like they work well together, but behind the scenes, it is a constant battle. Each would love the commoditization of the other's product. Right now, things are very commoditized in the hardware sector so lots of computers sell for cheap and people and companies spend hundreds of dollars for software with huge profit margins. The hardware companies want to shift things the other direction. This is my business analysis of it all. Do not think this is a bash on the ideals of free software, but I am sure that what is going on in the CEOs' heads has more to do with profit. ____________________ BYU Unix Users Group http://uug.byu.edu/ ___________________________________________________________________ List Info: http://uug.byu.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/uug-list
