Why?  Because they are hardware vendors.  If their customers spend less
money on purchasing/developing/maintaining software, they have more in
their budget to spend on hardware.

Software and hardware vendors have an interesting relationship.  They
need each other to sell products and must cooperate, but they are
fighting for a larger portion of the pie.  In public, they have to look
like they work well together, but behind the scenes, it is a constant
battle.  Each would love the commoditization of the other's product.
Right now, things are very commoditized in the hardware sector so lots
of computers sell for cheap and people and companies spend hundreds of
dollars for software with huge profit margins.  The hardware companies
want to shift things the other direction.

This is my business analysis of it all.  Do not think this is a bash on
the ideals of free software, but I am sure that what is going on in the
CEOs' heads has more to do with profit.
