There's usually more information that that.  If you run ``startx --
:1'' and it doesn't work, read the entire page.  It will usually tell
you what the problem is (mouse not found, problem initializing screen,
etc.).  /var/log/XFree86.* should help you out.  I know there's a lot
there, but you will probably find your problem spelled out for you.
