        Any chance it's just a problem with permissions, either of some thunderbird 
files or maybe something else related? The executable's probably ok, since 
it's not giving you any error messages on startup, but it could be a related 
file.
        To help you debug you could try untarring it and sticking it in your home 
directory as yourself, and fiddling with it there, if you're unable to help 
it by modifying permissions where it lies.
