http://www.plug.org Tonights Meeting : Memory Technology Devices
Ever needed to update your BIOS? Felt bad having to ask the neighbor for a windows disk just for that? Worry no more as Thayne walks us through some of the ins and outs of Memory Technology Devices, and how to access, and write images to them. Find out how your bios is just another device, and be amazed at how you could *really* mess up a system if you dont' pay attention. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the world of MTDs (that's Memory Technology Devices - not Microsoft Transmitted Diseases). The Linux MTD drivers are used to control FLASH memory. FLASH is used in embedded devices and is also commonly used to store the BIOS for most common motherboards. Are you tired of scrounging for a DOS boot disk so that you can update your BIOS? Want to risk the possibility of turning your new motherboard into a non-bootable paper weight? You can now update your BIOS directly from Linux! Come to the PLUG meeting where we'll either update the BIOS of a nice, dual Opteron or render it completely useless! Remember, I'm a trained professional and I can ruin a good motherboard as easily as you can at home doing the same thing. BTW - I make it sound worse than it is. I'll also show some precautions so that recovery from a borked flash is recoverable. When: Wednesday Nov, 12th Where: ViaWest Lindon Hosting facilities (Former Center 7 Building, Canopy 1 - Just north of the Home Depot) -- -- Jayce^
