kind of error messages do you get?
'apt-get install gnome' will work. I did this two days ago. However, I can't seem to get one thing working correctly. Even though I know metacity is running (ps aux|grep metacity), it looks like I'm using kde controls/widgets. The x-window-manager is set to use metacity. I haven't figured it out yet. The fonts still aren't quite right either but I'm still playing with it. Seriously though, you can't beat a Debian-based distro that autodetects tons o' hardware and installs in 10 minutes...
