Hey, just wondering if anyone has a definite preference between ATI or
nVidia when *only* considering linux drivers; I'm not interested in
performance comparisons. I understand nVidia offers binary drivers and that
they have gone farily well but I'm not sure what ATI offers. From what I've
seen on their web site, I've only seen .rpms, do they offer other ways of
installing their drivers?

Recent experiences would be nice.

Thanks

My experience has been very nvidia sided. My first linux install was on an s3 chipset back in the day when that was good, but since recent times i have set up one linux box with an ATI Rage and others with GeForce2 MX, GeForce4 MX, GeForce4 Ti4600, GeForce4 go, and a few other recent Nvidia chips. I have never had a problem with the nvidia cards (other than the driver not supporting apm suspend really well but that has gotten better recently and is only really important for laptops) The one ATI card i set up was a pain to get it set up with 3d acceleration working well but it was possible, also i have heard that the newer ATI cards are a lot better supported but i have not had experience with them. What i can say is that in my experience the nvidia drivers are excellent and it seems like nvidia is very aware of the importance of linux and are committed to making their cards work to their fullest under linux.
Take that for what it's worth.
