Sounds like a lockup. Have you tried magic sysrq key sequences?

Are you using the nvidia-kernel-source package for this, or did you get
it directly from nvidia? Try it the other way, in either case. (I just
did it this morning from nvidia's site to get the most recent version
(5328), but I usually do the nvidia-kernel-source way.)
 
Have you tried other kernels? I haven't tried with kernel 2.4.23, but I
have with 2.4.22 (and I'm now running 2.6.0 thanks to patches at
http://www.minion.de/nvidia.html ), and haven't had trouble. 

What chipset? If it's a riva make sure to turn off the riva framebuffer
in your kernel config.
