NEWS FLASH!! sudo <command name> root this works, i'm able to run programs as root but i still can't su? just another piece to the puzzle ________________________________

With some distributions, I'm not sure about SuSE in particular, you need to be a member of the `wheel' group to be able to su to root. From a simple google search, I believe SuSE behaves in the same way.
