Ok, well... with it still being early in the semester, i'm having a lot more time to play with my computer than i had last semester, so i've been asking a ton of questions... this one is kind of a continuation of a problem that i posted about a long time ago, but never quite resolved...
i've been trying to get linux working on my desktop... i tried RH8, but could not get the network card working (it's an nvidia nForce2 motherboard according to what I've been told, and for some reason the drivers don't work very well) so, after playing with 8 unsuccessfully for a while, i decided this week to try RH9. i ran a complete reinstall (i don't currently have anything important on the machine), and had to install from text because the graphical mode would just go black when it tried to start up. during installation, i made sure that i specified all of my hardware as exactly as it would let me. after installation when it went to reboot, the screen was just black when it got to the gui... my monitor beeped... i couldn't figure out how to shut it down because ctrl-alt-del did nothing, esc did nothing, and all the different keystrokes i could think of all did nothing, so i just hit the power button... i'm going to try and see if fedora might maybe have a bit more nvidia support, but i have to admit that i'm not exceptionally optimistic... has anybody had any luck with a setup similar to mine (all the info i have is below -- i don't know what half of it means...)???? i'm at a loss of how to get linux working with the network card and everything else... Thank you so much!!!!! ~Erin CPU: AMD ATHLON XP 2600/333 MB: ASUS A7N8XX 400 FSB 8XAGP (is this nvidia?)
