So as follow up to our text-mode image viewer discussion, how does one enable
framebuffer mode?

When I run fbset or fbi, I get the error

open /dev/fb0: No such device

So I guess that means it's not enabled. That file exists, tho.

I tried adding vga=ask to my kernel parameters and then selecting something off
the list of resolutions, but this seems does not alter the error. (Oh, and
when I do it under the 2.6 kernel, I just get diagonal lines on the screen and
nothing readable).

I'm running fedora core 1 under either kernel 2.4.22 or 2.6.1. I compiled 2.6,
enabling vga text, framebuffer console, etc. but my 2.4.22 is stock redhat. I'm
on a dell latitude c640 (using an ATI Radeon graphics card, I think).

Anyway, am I on the right track? Does one really have to edit grub.conf in
order to enable framebuffer mode?

Thanks,
Grant
