You shouldn't need to do anything special... as long as your projector
supports the same resolution as your laptop (or is smart enough to
auto-convert). Now, if your laptop is set for 1024x768 and your
projector can't handle anything higher than 800x600, then you've got
some work to do.

Basically, boot the machine up, then plug the display cable in and turn
on the projector. Then it Fn-F7 to switch to the external video. Hit
it again, and it should display on both simultaneously (handy when
doing a presentation).

You didn't say what model of ThinkPad or projector you have, so it's
hard to give more detailed help than that. If your projector doesn't
support the same resolution as your TP, then you might need to check
your X config and see if you've got multiple resolutions configured in.
If so, you can try hitting Alt-KP-+ or Alt-KP-- to switch resolutions
on the fly. Posting a copy of your X config would be helpful, too.
Note that you might have trouble getting keypad keys on the TP without
an external keyboard.

Hope that helps.
