I did a little digging, and there is a configuration option that 
controls this handling of addresses in postfix.  It is found in main.cf, 
and called 'recipient_delimiter.'  In my copy of main.cf it was set to:

#recipient_delimiter = +

so all I had to do was uncomment it.
