While still in use in some places, I wouldn't recommend NIS/NIS+/yp
anymore. It's too insecure, and is difficult to maintain. Don't use NIS.

For Linux file sharing, I think that NFS is definitely the way to go.
There exist other network filesystems, but in my experience, they all
stink, and really aren't ready for a production system.

Here in CS, we've used a number of systems over the years, including NIS
and storing everything inside NDS (note to self: don't do _that_ again).
We currently use an LDAP/Samba/NFS/Kerberos system, thanks to Michael
Torrie, so I can vouch for the fact that the system he'll be describing
will work.

While our system works well for our needs, for anyone setting up a smaller
system (maybe less than 50 users), I would _NOT_ recommend such a complex
system, though it would probably work. I've seen excellent results
storing everything in MySQL and using nss-mysql and pam-mysql. There's a
lot less setup required, and the database is easier to conceptualize than
LDAP.

There are actually a number of options right now, so anyone looking to
implement an authentication/user information system right now should look
at the various options. Presentations like Byron and Michaels will help
people make an informed decision based on their needs, abilities, and the
relative merits of the products available.
