Any of yall that know me have realized that I'm a distro junkie. I'll go through three distros a week at times. The funny thing is, I always come back to Debian. Even after giving Knoppix a whirl for a good month, I nuked it and installed Debian again. Yes, I know Knoppix is pretty much the same but when I installed Gnome, the widgets still looked like KDE. I could never figure it out so I nuked it. The past few weeks I've been giving Mandrake 10 community a whirl. Not bad but not what I want. I don't have time for Gentoo (again). So tonight, I think I may grab the latest debian installer and install it once again (they finally made grub the default boot loader!!). I do have a dilemma though. I can never get my cd burner and dvd drives to play nice with debian. I know I'm just missing something. I usually let discover handle the symlinks for me but then I always have to be root to do anything to the drives. I've tried passing kernel parameters in grub but nothing I do ever works quite right. I either can't burn or can't watch DVDs. So my question is this:
How do I get the kernel to load an ide-scsi module for my burner and have just a plain old ide-cd module load for my DVD-ROM so me and the kid can watch Toy Story? Should I not worry about discover and just handle the symlinks myself? What about the 2.6 kernel and all of this? Yes this is long. Yes this is wordy but heck, I haven't posted in forever. ;-)
