I installed the 2.6.5-1-686 kernel package from Debian/sid, and the
corresponding headers. I then downloaded alsa-source and created the
deb package, which I subsequently used dpkg -i to install. The modules
are found in /lib/modules/2.6.5-1-686/alsa. Now, when I run
/etc/init.d/alsa restart, I get this message:
Shutting down ALSA (unknown version): not running
Starting ALSA (unknown version): failed - ALSA modules not installed

/var/log/messages shows:
Apr 23 12:00:01 naples kernel: snd: Unknown symbol
unregister_sound_special
Apr 23 12:00:01 naples kernel: snd: Unknown symbol
register_sound_special
Apr 23 12:00:01 naples kernel: snd: Unknown symbol sound_class

On another machine (running the same kernel, but for smp) I didn't have
this many problems. Any suggestions, helps?

Casey
