1 - gave the same errors as "emerge system"
2 - USE="java" emerge gcc - ran fine, but then "emerge system" gave the
same old error
3 - the java-config option resulted in : jc_options: VM not found,
use --list-available-vms

I'm currently trying Grant's suggestion to emerge system without java, then
gcc with afterwards. So far, it's gotten farther than it was, (not done
yet...) so I'm hopefull.

Thanks,

Michael

There are about three different suggestions there to fix it:
1. "emerge portage"
2. USE="java" emerge gcc
3. java-config --set-system-vm=blackdown-jdk-1.4.1

good luck.
