Michael,
Gentoo would be great to try, I really like it. Their documentation is the best I have seen!
Here is a Gentoo FAQ for ppc: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml
Here is the Gentoo installation for ppc: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml
For much more information in general about getting things to work on Gentoo: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml
There are a lot of guides there.
They (the guides above) are written specifically for your platform, so it should help out during the install.

I'm going to install linux on my iBook this week. In a past thread, someone recommended Debian for ppc. Does anyone else have recommendations? I've installed and used Yellow Dog before, and have been trying to decide between YDL, Debian, and Gentoo. I'm kind of leaning towards Gentoo, since I haven't tried it on any platform.
Thanks! ~Michael
