Check out the Music Player Daemon (mpd): http://www.musicpd.org/
Run that and it'll open a port which you can connect to using a web interface, or a command-line client, or a Winamp/xmms-like client, or even write your own.

I've got Debian unstable running on a pentium I, with a sound card on it's way. I'd like to make this into a music server. What I'm imagining is being able to connect to it from either of our other computers, and set up playlists, play songs, etc. My solution right now is that it starts a VNC server, and I'll vnc into it from my computer, edit playlists etc like that. Am I missing a simpler route?
Thanks!

This sentence would be seven words long if it were six words shorter.
