Are you sure your monitor can support higher than 800x600?  I've had
that problem before, being a poor college student and all.

Are you using xdm, kdm, or gdm?  They each work differently.

But usually you can make a file in your home directory called .xsession,
which if found is a script that will start up your session.  But
different ?dms will sometimes treat it differently.
