Um, check /var/log/messages for anything unusual...that's a toughy. 
Another thing that used to freeze my laptop was one of the
screensavers that came with Redhat.  That was a couple years ago, but
who knows.  After I finally noticed the correlation and disabled that
screensaver everything was fine.
