I hope I'm not too late, but if you're problems are due to virii/adware/spyware installing SP2 can be a big mistake. It won't fix those problems, and sometimes it may possibly destroy your system.

Instead of running SP2, I would reccomend running services.msc and msconfig, and looking for anything that's suspicious that you can disable. Bring it up in safe mode, and run a virus scan as well. This will frequently nab all but the most subversive and well camouflaged adware.

Scott K hasn't installed SP2 yet.

We've been installing it where I work and it's been going smoothly. Check the known software incompatibility list on Microsoft's site, and keep in mind that the firewall is enabled by default. I you're just using run-of-the-mill programs, you shouldn't have any trouble.

well, if you find anything interesting/definitive on the web, you should

as far as my 'personal wisdom' goes, i have no plans to update my winxp
installations. it runs fine and i'm not stressed out about security on
my own lan. of course, if my system was "freaking out" like yours then i
might consider it, but then again, i don't know what you mean.

fwiw.

Yes, I winced, I read the article yesterday, good stuff. As for stfw I
am doing that, but I wanted personal wisdom from people I know. I guess
