I brought this question up before but still haven't been able to
fix it. I have a PC Laptops laptop with an Intel 852GM (using
the I810 driver). It refuses to run at 1024x768 but always defaults
to 800x600 (I can get 640x480 too). This wouldn't necessarily be a
problem except that the BIOS antialiases 800x600 and 640x480 modes,
which isn't good because I do graphic design work and need
pixel-level precision and that's rather hard when all the sharp
lines are blurred onscreen. :) In Windows, at first it would only
run 800x600 too, but there were some Intel drivers on the CD that
came with the laptop and when I installed those, I was able to get a
sharp 1024x768 with no antialiasing. Here are a few (hopefully
relevant) lines from my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
(--) I810(0): Maximum space available for video modes: 16192 kByte
(II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-67.00 kHz
(II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-75.00 Hz
(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1280x1024" (no mode of this name)
(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1280x960" (no mode of this name)
(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1152x864" (no mode of this name)
(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (no mode of this name)
(II) I810(0): Increasing the scanline pitch to allow tiling mode
(800 -> 1024).
(--) I810(0): Virtual size is 800x600 (pitch 1024)
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "800x600"
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "640x480"
I've tried upping the hsync and vrefresh ranges but that didn't
help. Now, Intel has some drivers which I downloaded
(/usr/X11R6/dripkg/dri-I915.tar.gz is the file from the RPM). I
unpacked it and ran the install.sh script, but this is what I got
when it tried to compile the kernel modules:
Compiling new agpgart module...
Compiling DRM module...
ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile
The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel
modules. Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for
information on what went wrong.
dri.log says:
make: *** No rule to make target `gdg.ko'. Stop.
I can't remember enough about make and compiling modules and stuff
to figure it out. I tried to recompile my kernel a while ago but it
gave me a mess of errors about modules not matching the kernel and
all sorts of stuff, so I've left it alone. Oh, the Intel site says
that perhaps the reason I can't get to 1024x768 is that the video
BIOS isn't up-to-date enough, but PC Laptops said it's the most
recent one and Windows can do it.
Second issue: does anyone else have a PC Laptops laptop that freezes
all the time? It's very annoying but I suppose it's good to keep
one on one's toes all the time (now I know what it'd be like to have
an aneurysm :)).
Thanks,
Ben
